A gem of a seaside town, unlike many others in England, Deal has remained delightfully uncommercialised. The pebbly beach is backed by paved sea defense walls and quaint historic housing that was once the haunt of Kent's smugglers. Small fishing boats are still hauled up along the front and the catch of the day may be sold from the back of the boat. From the pier, the view of Deal's front is a delight. Amongst the ancient colourwashed cottages you can pick out the distinctive Timeball Tower which ancient mariners depended upon to give them a visual signal of the accurate time. To the south crouches Henry VIII's fortress, Deal Castle, one of several built to defend England against invasion from the sea. .The main shopping street, packed with numerous small specialist shops is set back a couple of blocks from, and runs parallel to, the sea front.
