Kittochside Museums of Scotland - Glasgow - Museum

Kittochside Museums of Scotland - Glasgow - Museum

Distance 3.52 miles (5.63 km)
Arriving at the car park for the Museum of Scottish Country Life at Kittochside (on the outskirts of East Kilbride in South Lanarkshire), the initial impression is not particularly favourable as the main museum building has been made to look like a farmyard barn (presumably deliberately). However, once inside, there is a bright, modern museum with excellent facilities. And there is even better outside, with a working farm and a farmhouse which is just as it was 50 years ago. The museum has a wide range of farm equipment on display and plenty of displays providing an insight into farming and the countryside. The displays are a combination of items from the National Trust and the National Museums of Scotland - the latter has brought its National Country Life Collection to Kittochside and is responsible for the management and operation of the Museum.

There cant be many people who have survived an attack by a lion. But Scotlands most famous explorer, Dr David Livingstone, is one of them. This incident, one of many remarkable events throughout his life, is dramatically re-created in a sculpture designed and gifted by the Oscar-winning animator Ray Harryhausen, and his wife Diana, Livingstones great-granddaughter. Many of Livingstones personal belongings are on display including journals, and navigational and medical equipment clearly he was not a man to travel light! His is an engaging story for all ages and for youngsters theres plenty to do including quizzes, dressing up, and even a lion hunt.
