Night At The Sidings
I booked a surprise night at The Sidings recently for my husband\'s birthday. He is a train enthusiast and we stayed in The Flying Scotsman room - perfect, right by the tracks and with its own verandah. The staff are so friendly and helpful. We had a lovely meal in the carriage restaurant and everything was great. This really is the place to stay for a different kind of break!

Returned After 5 Years To Find A Number Of The Same Faces
Great new bathroom, room lacked storage, please swap the kettle table for a set of drawers, that is all.

Staff are lovely in the bar and dining areas. Food is good be it a cooked breakfast, a Sunday roast or a Kleftiko. Had a great creme brûlée as well. Parking is plentiful, other guests were also very nice. Lovely to see the same owners, John and Brent.

Thank you

A Unique & Very Enjoyable Experience
Myself and my Wife stayed here very recently as part of an anniversary weekend away and were very happy with our stay. We booked this as we wanted something quirky away from the norm to celebrate our anniversary and that is exactly what we got.

On arrival we were greeted by a Staff member who swiftly checked us in and then showed us to our accommodation for the night, which was the Robin Hood Room. First impressions were very good, the room although quite small (like you would expect in a train carriage) has everything you need for a comfortable stay with a snug double bed, tea and coffee making facilities, flat screen TV, wardrobe, shower room with WC, drench shower and basin with free toiletries.

We dined in the dining car in the evening and the food was very nice. I had chicken liver pate to start, my wife had lamb meatballs then for main courses I had Lamb Kleftiko and my wife had the mixed kebab, all were of a very high standard and very tasty. We found the prices very reasonable with the quality and quantity of the food in mind.

The bar area is set in a large conservatory overlooking the main East Coast Railway Line. The Staff are very attentive and serve you at your table. The drinks are very reasonably priced and there is a large selection available. The conservatory has a very relaxed atmosphere and we found it a very pleasant place to sit, relax and while away a few hours.

Breakfast the next day was also excellent, there is a full continental selection and a lovely cooked breakfast is also available for a moderate extra charge.

I can\'t honestly think of any negative comments about this place, one suggestion though is to provide fans in the rooms as the rooms do get quite hot when the weather is warm. They may have these at reception though and to be honest we didn\'t ask so don\'t know about this.

All in all I would review this place as saying it\'s very unique and rather quirky but in a very good way, and if your looking for something different to the

Amazing Place
We stayed at the sidings for one night and has such a brilliant time, my husband and I were made to feel so welcome by Brett as we checked in , a lovely young man . Our room was number 4 the Robin Hood , was quite compact but had everything we needed for our stay , great comfortable bed , tv , tea / coffee making facilities , nice shower and hairdryer . Enjoyed our 2 course evening meal , the chicken kebabs were amazing and the range of drinks were also great . We had a walk to the local pub in the village which was really nice also and wasn\'t too far to get to . Had a great nights sleep and awoke the next morning to a continental breakfast which included gluten free bread which I thought was a nice touch , cereals , boiled eggs , cheese , meats , fruit and fruit juice and plenty of tea and coffee . You can have a cooked breakfast for a small extra charge if you wanted but we had plenty with the continental to be honest .. We checked out about 10am and had a drive up to York , had a fantastic stay at the sidings which is a very quirky place with all the authentic details still around , a massive thankyou to all the staff for a brilliant stay , can\'t wait to return .

Something Different
We loved our stay here, it is great how the old train carriages have been turned into bedrooms. Along with the restaurant being another train carriage it really made a change from staying in your basic chain hotels. All the staff were so friendly and made you feel part of the family. If I had one suggestion it would be for them to stock up on fans for the rooms in such hot weather, I know it might only be a few days a year but the room was REALLY hot. That said will definitely stay here again.

Trainspotter Heaven
This hotel is a must for railway enthusiasts, my husband was in his element watching trains go by. The bedroom and shower room were obviously quite snall but that was to be expected. Unfortunately for my husband and myself, the bed was extremely soft so we didn\'t have the best of nights sleep. On the plus side, we ate in the restaurant and the food was excellent!! A Haven For The Rail Enthusiast.
If you like trains, you will love this.

The English breakfast is fantastic and will keep you going all day.

Being on the main line it great for train spotting, plenty of variety here. 4 lines pass the location and there is plenty of places to view trains, inside and outside.

Do not expect 4 star accommodation, you are staying in old railway carriages. Our room had just a bed, no chair to sit on, but that did not bother me, I was here to see trains! York is just 3 miles away, so it easy to go explore York and of course the NRM.

I would love to go and stay there again.

The staff are very friendly and helpful.

Lots of lovely rail memorabilia everywhere, in fact a little museum in its own right.

The Sidings hotel is a lovely place to stay, especially if you like trains. The room we were in was quite small,no wardrobe or chest of drawers. We Arrived Not Knowing What To Expect.
We knew the sidings location from passing in the train, however from arriving to leaving we thought it was great. The layout was very good, staff friendly and helpful. The outside balcony, tables and chairs meant you could sit outside all day and evening. The restaurant was so good in particular the burger with feta and caramelised onion, one of best ever. The continental breakfast was also very good. Location for visiting places also good.

We were very lucky with weather and sorry to leave.

Nice Stay
We really enjoyed our two night stay at The Sidings in May 2017. We ate in the restaurant and the meal was excellent. Breakfasts were very good with a lot of choice. We stayed in the Orient Express room. Bathroom was lovely although would benefit from a small shelf to put things on. The bedroom was extremely small , which we did expect however we saw The Royal Suite next door and were amazed that for the same price that had some chairs and much more space. We would definitely come back but would not stay in the Orient Express after seeing the other option. Thanks to very welcoming staff.

We booked this knowing that it is at the side of the rail track which for us added to the stay. The carriage bedrooms are authentic carriages so don\'t expect a new minimalist show case room but do expect a great quirky feel. The rooms do have en suite facilities and the shower was amazing wished it was like that at home. Tea and coffe was provided in rooms which were very clean. The restraurant was a carriage and the food was excellent with equally excellent service. The breakfast as in the conservatory and we chose to just have what was classed as continental which gave a great selection but there was an option to choose a cooked breakfast for a nominal charge. All in all it was a fabulous stay with the feel of being on a travelling train without going anywhere. Loved it.

Great Food, Comfortable, Quirky, Friendly
We were booked into the \'Royal Train\' room at this quirky and interesting hotel, where the bedrooms and restaurants are in converted railway coaches. There is also a central bar / conservatory area (which overlooked the nearby main line railway), which has loads of character and is full of railway-related artefacts to fascinate the enthusiast. More importantly, perhaps, the bar seemed well stocked with good quality beers. It was also very cosy on a cold day, with a real log fire on the go.

I can heartily recommend the food in the restaurant; we had a very tasty meal, which was reasonably priced, freshly-made and with attentive, friendly service.

Our bedroom was very large, taking up nearly half of the original carriage. It had a large and comfortable double bed (and a single for a child which we didn\'t use), with the bonus that you could lie in the bed and watch the trains go by! The room had only recently been completely refurbished. However, there were a few small niggles, and it seemed that some finishing touches were still needed. For example, the shower leaked over the bathroom floor. Also, there was no proper hanging area for clothes, and in the bathroom no loo roll holder or soap dishes. Small bedside tables with lamps would have been useful, too. When we were there there was a very strong wind blowing outside, and it was noticeable that some of the windows let in quite a draught. However, these are only minor comments, and didn\'t spoil things. We enjoyed our stay and would certainly come again, probably in summer!

Husbands 60th Birthday Treat
Wow where to start we were excited before we arrived to have been given a gift of a night at the Sidings so different to anything else out there..We were given a warm welcome by Sid (hope you are all recovered sir)and now in no particular order..the place unique lovely lots of railway momentos around bar and seating area with open fire very welcoming.. staff all amazing usually there are one or two who seem to go out of their way here everyone welcoming friendly and yet professional... quirky from the ticket key fobs to tickets please in the dining carriage made me giggle... room (compact as you would expect its a railway carriage !!) cosy, warm, comfy bed, toiletries, tea and coffee towels everything you need. Had evening meal in the dining carriage lovely experience romantic atmosphere. Wonderful food and VERY reasonably priced. Buffet continental style breakfast served in conservatory was fine.. not a big breakfast eater..judging by the quality of the evening meal I imagine the optional full English is of a high standard. All in all this is THE PLACE out of everywhere I have ever stayed in the UK I most want to come back to...its my birthday in July so I hope my husband reads this ;))

Thank you everyone for such an amazing experience only one negative we didn\'t stay longer ;))) and star rating below 6 out of five but couldn\'t give that score

Very Surprised
A very surprising place to stay.

The carriages are being refreshed but the beds are very comfortable.

The rooms are not big but these are train carriages.

Ceaser is a great host, very friendly and accommodating.

The food is very good.

The decor will help take you back to old days but in a good way.

Close to York by car and lots of parking.

Great value for money and watch out for special deals.

A Must For Rail Enthusiasts
The Sidings is exactly as described. The location is perfect if you liove trains and anything railway related. If you want 5 star luxury don\'t try it but the opportunity to sleep in a railway carriage and watch trains fly past on the east coast mainline is unique. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The staff are very welcoming. Food was very good too. It was great fun to stay and I would recommend it.

Railway Enthusiast\'s Paradise
This hotel offers a railway enthusiast the opportunity to hark back to the halcyon days of sleepers and dining cars. The converted coaches offer a higher quality of \"sleeper\" than BR ever offered, but with the sounds and sensations of the real thing. Dinner is served in a dining car, redolent of the LNER restaurant cars, with excellent food and service to match, though the waiters and waitresses do not wear the original short white jackets. We chose the Flying Scotsman suite, and were able to watch the mainline traffic coming up from the South, and down from the North, and, of course, hear them.

The hotel lived up tour expectations, no, surpassed them, with good food, very generous portions, and at a very reasonable price. The staff are friendly, and clearly enthusiasts themselves. This is NOT a modern, sanitised, quiet hotel experience - it is much, much, better, and we look forward to our next trip to York.

Yorkshire Pullman - Great Room. Well Chuffed
I booked the Yorkshire Pullman room, and it was as I expected it to be.. a converted carriage, old BR fittings.. perfect.. but.. you need to wear something on your feet if you go into the bathroom, the under-floor heating was on very high, as it cannot be turned down, according to the staff.. I would\'ve preferred it to be OFF to be fair.

Also, the heated towel rail was very very close to the toilet, and I burnt my arm 3 times.. oh.. the toilet door, a converted BR carriage door, I think.. would not shut..

The staff, on the other hand, were first class, and were very helpful to us both.

The food was very tasty at tea time. We had the fixed 2 course meal.

I would come again, and hope I haven\'t put anyone off..

What Do You Get For Your Money.
10 out of 10 to the sidings and staff. not only do you get great value for your money £80 for b&b the staff seem to care about you and the establishment that they work for. We have paid double this amount to stop in York before to be honest i will re book the Sidings again. I do understand it my be a little bit from York centre but park and ride is close by or a taxi for about £8 is not a big issue.Food at the restaurant was first class for the price you are paying. Remember you are staying in a 100+ year old train carriage it may be cold and have condensation on the inside of the windows it wont be to every ones taste but give it a go you mite just love it. Have already booked again.

Very Disappointed
Given the stay as a Present and partner was looking so forward to it. Classed as a Unique Hotel it certainly is that and not in a good way. We were booked into the Flying Scotsman room and it could have been any room. Not a single thing in the room was related to this famous train, not even anything tartan covered. The room was shabby and cold and nothing would induce us to stay in there. We asked for another room and given the option of two. We chose \'the family room\' as it was larger and with better facilities but looking round it still lacked that care and attention. Curtains were off their rails and dirty , the table cloth had a cigarette burn in it. We sat and looked around and in honesty couldn\'t spend a night there. The restaurant is a let down too with poor menu choice and the only seating are in the bar is a very old and tatty 3 piece suite. My partner is recovering from depression and has epilepsy this \'break\' was supposed to lift him. Sadly it did the opposite and my only option was to book into another hotel which cost £150. The carriages need an overhaul and if the rooms are named after famous trains ensure they reflect it. The website is very old and dated and do not take the gallery as it looks now because it certainly doesn\'t. There isn\'t one thing I can recommend about this \'hotel\'.

Our Experience
We celebrated our wedding anniversary at the Siddings this week. The hotel had just reopened after a 10 day refurbishment, we did have a short time to wait for our room The Silver Jubilee room as they were putting the finishing touches to it. The room was clean and nicely presented with a brand new modern en-suit, fresh new carpets and curtains. Unfortunately some of the furniture had been revarnished and was still very tacky to the touch but we didn\'t let this spoil our experience.

The staff and owner CID were all very pleasant and helpful.

We also had a wonderful meal in the restaurant a period railway carriage at a very reasonable price.

All in all a very enjoyable experience and would recommend it to anyone looking for something different.

If I had to find a criticism - the hotel may want to invest in replacing some of the old carpet in the room. I understand the original look is part of what it is, I just felt slightly uncomfortable having my socks off walking around the room.

The room was snug as you would expect for a train carriage with a very comfortable bed and en suite with shower. Tea and coffee making facilities were provided but also available in the cosy bar which had a lovely log fire. We chose to eat in the restaurant with views of the railway and enjoyed a delicious a la carte meal. The staff were very attentive and keen to ensure we enjoyed our meal. As it was a Greek Night, when we retired to the bar we were able to enjoy the Greek music and dancing which we were encouraged to join in with. Next morning there was a continental breakfast, more than enough after the huge meal the previous night. All in all a very enjoyable stay. Quirky Stay But Needs Improvement
We got a nice welcome and was showed to our room. we expected the room to be compact and it was. I was shocked by the towels one was so threadbare it had a hole in it the others had threads hanging from them. There was a light missing but even with this on it would have been rather murky certainly not enough to read. We were told that there was a problem with the electrics and given a rather unsuitable lamp. The curtains were hanging off the rail and there was not enough hooks to hang things on. The evening meal was nice enough but I asked for the house red shiraz which I thought was £13.95 but realised when I got home that I was charged £16.95. The continental breakfast could have been better cornflakes or coco pops on the first day cheap processed ham but enjoyed the fruit and salad with the cheeses on the first morning. The second morning there was no fruit and salad- Why? There was a packet of bran flakes though muesli would have been appreciated. Lots of inconsistencies. The rubbish that is seen outside from the bedroom corridors between the bedroom carriages need clearing. We liked the lounge and the bottled beers. It was an enjoyable stay as the staff are very friendly but needs improvements.

Great For Train Lovers.
Have stayed here before and thoroughly enjoyed it so didn\'t hesitate to return with my sister-in-law who absolutely loves trains. For the most part, The Sidings did not disappoint, but they did make a mistake in our room booking which was rather disappointing as I had gone to a lot of trouble to ensure we had the room with a double aspect on the railway, as my sister-in-law, who has a learning disability, was particularly looking forward to sitting in bed watching the trains. However, the room we got was very comfortable and did have a view on one side at least, and they gave us a free drink as an apology. (To add insult to injury, the trains didn\'t start running in the morning until 9.45am as it was a Sunday, but that was hardly the hotel\'s fault!!) The food in the restaurant was extremely good. The breakfast (continental) was acceptable but nothing special. I am happy to recommend this hotel, but my advice would be to check in early if you want a particular room!!

Step Back In Time
We were given a warm enthusiastic greeting when we arrived at The Sidings. After signing in we were given room keys to start our adventure. Our room was cosy which was to be expected. The bathroom was clean and towels were provided, maybe two per person would have been better. The bar looked well stocked and service was always 110% and always with friendly banter. By evening the restaurant car took you back to times gone by. It was beautifully set out with in intimate booths as was during the steam age. The menu gave a good choice of Greek dishes with full explanations given by the staff. Post dining a roaring log fire awaited in the bar area. A personal favourite part of mine. Slumber came easy in comfortable beds in a warm room.

Oh I\'ve forgotten the constant reminder of trains clattering past. To be honest if you book into The Sidings as either a train buff or as someone wanting to stay in quirky surroundings the noise of the trains blend gentle into the background.

The staff couldn\'t have been anymore helpful. They always had smiles on their faces and friendly.

Overall I would recommend The Sidings to family and friends without a doubt!

Unique Quirky Experience
We really enjoyed our stay at this very unusual venue. You would think it would be noisy next to the track - we stayed a Saturday night and didn\'t hear or see a train from 2300 to nearly 0900. The welcome was. The food was good and we enjoyed the Cypriot theme. Our room (cabin) was very comfortable with an excellent view of the track. This is not a venue simply for train spotters - we feel certain many couples would simply enjoy the experience of dining in a Pullman car and sleeping in a carriage rather than the usual non despite chain hotel. We will visit again.

York Minster - Landmark

Distance 5.21 miles (8.33 km)
The magnificent Cathedral in York, known as York Minster is the largest Gothic Cathedral in Northern Europe, renowned for containing the largest collection of medieval stained glass in England. Built in the Early English, Decorated and Perpendicular styles it is a pure classic of the period. Five hundred and eighteen feet in length, it is two hundred and forty one feet wide at the transept and its central tower rises one hundred and ninety eight feet making it the largest lantern tower in Britain. Bede records that a small wooden chapel was built on this site in 627 A.D. for the baptism of Edwin, king of Northumbria. Edwin's successor Oswald enclosed the chapel in stone and dedicated it to St. Peter, as the Cathedral in York has been ever since.

Clifford`s Tower
North Yorkshire
In 1068, William the Conqueror built a motte-and-bailey castle on the present site of Cliffords Tower in York, to strengthen his military presence in the north. The tower is now the most prominant remaining part of the castle, which was rebuilt in stone in the 13th century. Today, views from the Tower over York show why it played such a key role in the control of northern England.

York Golf Club - York - Golf

Distance 5.88 miles (9.41 km)
York's oldest golf club was formed in 1890 and moved to Strensall in 1904 where the course was designed by J.H. Taylor. In the early days the course was very open, now the fairways on the 6301 yards course are tree lined but the flat course retains its natural heathland and heather heritage and provides plenty of variety and challenge for the high and low handicapper alike. The Club hosts many County and York Union events and stages one of Yorkshire's premier 36 hole amateur competitions, The York Rose Bowl. The Club offers good Clubhouse facilities and "all in" golf and catering packages are available as well as separate a la carte menus.
