Little Gem Of A Hotel
What a wonderful stay we had @ Little John. We opted for a cottage, which was lovely, clean and cosy, but with a huge kitchen for social making food & picnics for our long walks which you can do from the hotel. Around the corner from the Swimming pool as well. The staff are super friendly, the bar is nice. Food is good. Will definitely come back here!

Rooms nice. Mix up with our booking. Double instead of twin. Booking.com problem it seems. Staff very helpful - sorted it all out for us and offered an alternative. Nice atmosphere in the bar. Breakfast ok. Enjoyed our stay

Great Value Traditional Inn
The rooms were spacious and well appointed, great shower. Relaxed atmosphere and traditional pub food. Rooms quiet. The parking is thw only slight drawback as It was full and had to pay on a public car park overnight and for the daytime. Near Station and Hoght Street though.

Had a great stay at the Little John Pub.

Friendly staff with easy check in/out - allowed us a slightly early check in which was a great help.

Good Stay
The hotel didn't disappoint but it also didn't exceed expectations. The rooms were comfortable (and very warm! which is perfect) though the wooden steps leading to the rooms (i.e. upstairs) were quite noisy so we would be woken up in the early night or early morning by other people walking or even running up and down the stairs. I do usually travel with earplugs but forgot them this time. We also had a few issues with service (forgetting to serve our order, making us wait at check in) but the friendly man sorting out breakfasts every morning made up for it single handedly. The hotel is in a great location and the pub downstairs makes eating very easy - we enjoyed our contintental breakfast and had dinners at the hotel most nights.

A Good Nights Rest
We were a little apprehensive about our stay because we had no first hand experience of the Litle John, however there was no need. The room we had was excellent, beautifully decorated, spotlessly clean and such a comfortable bed. The room was a good size, good shower and bathroom facilities although a hair dryer would have been useful.

My husband had a cooked breakfast and declared it was the best bacon he had had for a long time. As a continental breakfast person Inwould have liked a bit more variety.

Very good value for money

Very Nice 3 Day Break
Large clean bedroom; good and plentiful food and ideal location with many other amenities close by i.e restaurants; shops and local transport buses and trains. There should be more staff however, as only one girl was having to do everything i.e serve behind the bar; take food orders; deliver the food orders to each table and then set up knapkins and cutlery for breakfasts etc.

Ideally Placed Accomodation
Well placed for the purpose of our visit (Taking part in a group-on deal for caving & weaseling) and was able to get to out meeting place with ease.

Nice room, comfortable beds with no disturbance with noise at all despite it being a public house.

The evening meal we purchased was of good value and quality. Our breakfast was really tasty but unfortunately we didn't get the time to totally savour the quality/amount of it.

Lovely stay. In retrospect a bit pricey for the amount of time we actually spent in it but that's what you get when you need to stay in the heart of the peak district and to serve our particular purpose!

Generally Positive
We stayed for one night and found the room and the breakfast excellent. Perhaps one thing to consider would be an obvious place for checking in and encourage staff to be proactive when clearly people have arrived to.stay. Once away from the bar the young woman who checked us in was very helpful and friendly, the same could not be said for the atmosphere in the bar where we had to check in. The same woman was very chatty and obliging during breakfast and I can't help but wonder if there is a bit of pressure being put on staff by the regulars?

Clean And Comfortable Room, But No Flexibility For Weekend Guests
The room was clean and comfortable but due to a sky light (and no other windows) got light very early. I was disappointed that the hotel did not take into account that weekend guests might want the flexibility of a check-out time later than 10am. I appreciate that the rooms are cleaned on a schedule but found the banging on our door was 10:05 was something I have never experienced in either a hotel or B&B, particularly on a weekend. A good experience let down by a lack of flexibility.

Nice And Simple Place To Stay
The Little John was a nice and simple pub to stay at. It was fairly modern and clean and provides a great breakfast included. The service was variable and despite notices encouraging guests to hang towels up if you want to keep them, our two hung-up towels were taken away and only one clean one was given back. When we mentioned this to staff a poor attitude was given and three more clean towels were pressed upon us. The Little John welcomes dogs which is the main reason we stayed there and has a lovely location in the centre of Hathersage.

Ok, Just Little Niggles
Hi, we enjoyed our stay as the location, bar, room size, decoration and cleanliness were fine. But maintenance let it down. The shower is useless, took 8 mins to get the water temp right, and the shower head needs support. The radiator is excessively noisy, and couldnt be turned off because of the noise. Hooks on the backs of doors, a full length mirror and a hairdryer would be appreciated. But the breakfast was excellent and the bed & bedding very comfortable, so i would stay here again. And the staff were nice. Kind regards

We would certaily stay here again and will certainly reccomendit to others.

Very Clean, Comfy Room.
The room (Friar Tuck) was spotlessly clean, in good decorative order and very comfy. The breakfast was good and the lady who served it very friendly. The pub seems popular with locals, it has a good range of ales. They are also popular as a restaurant. They were very busy the weekend I was there with people having obviously chosen it as the venue for family birthday celebrations. Food is served until 10.00pm so no rush the end of your day's activities. The bar staff are generally friendly. A couple of things to be mindful of: The stairwell door is alarmed until 7.30 a.m so this may be a problem if you want an early start. There is a carpark, but if the pub is busy, spaces can fill up quickly. I would have preferred a better wifi signal but this is an old building in the Peak District, so I can't complain really.

No pleasantries on arrival-rushed to the room and left.Donald very attentive at breakfast. Breakfast fab.Not much attention for 2nd beakfast-was it the cook, housekeeper or cleaner who attended us?The room was beautiful and towels soooo soft. Bed very comfy.A Simple dining chair in the room would have been good so we could both sit down.VERY creaky floor! Ideal base for walking.Would visit again but ask for the Dungeon-at least it has 2 chairs. Love the names of the rooms.

A Good Location For Exploring The Peak District
We stayed at the Little John Hotel, Hathersage for 2 nights and we really enjoyed our stay there. Stephanie and her staff were very friendly and made us feel welcome. Our room was clean and we had a comfortable bed. Breakfasts were hearty and we had 2 evening meals which we also enjoyed. Not 5 star accommodation, but all the better for that. Very reasonable rate. I would recommend this hotel as a good base for exploring the Peak District.

Derbyshire Break
Had a two night break at the Little John Hotel staying in the Loxley Cottage. The cottage is not luxury but is perfectly adequate for 4 people to stay on a self catering break. Had everything you needed and was clean. Manager was very helpful and friendly. The beer and lager were kept well and tasted exactly as they should. The food they served looked and smelt great but we didn't eat in there. Only negative - ask the builders who crowd the bar to move in to the side room. It didn't bother me personally but I saw it bothered others who came in and left without ordering anything.

Convenient Location
We needed just a one night stay for an event in Sheffield but were reluctant to stay in the city. Using the cottage s/c arrangement was the best value for 3 adults as there were 2 bedrooms, a modern kitchen and lounge. I would use this again if I need to visit the area again as it is a lovely village with many cafes and outdoor shops.

Recent Visit
When we arrived we were greeted by a young man and shown to our room, very friendly. When we settled in we found the room to be very spacious and comfortable and well decorated, although some parts of the wallpaper were scratched. We then went to the bar area for a drink and found a good choice of speciality beers, all were great. We visited the night Wales played in the euros and expected a lot of noise but this proved not to be. We also sampled the food and found that it was of a fairly good standard and plenty of it. We both slept very well although the runner over the bed was a little dirty at the ends where it had caught the floor(maybe a shorter runner would be advised). Breakfast was very good and of good quality and again portion size was very generous. The shower was very good, all to often they tend to be slow and no hot water but this was fab. Overall we enjoyed our stay and when we return to the area will definitely book at the little john again. The staff were very friendly, thanks for a great stay

Review
The Little John Hotel is in a wonderful area. But we will not be staying again. It is a shame because a few notices telling guests where (for example) to turn on the hot water, or that the shower had been plumbed backwards (so the cold was hot and vice versa) would have helped enormously. Badly equipped kitchen (only one blunt knife), no serving bowls. Very comfortable beds though.

Gateway To The Peak District
The Little John is a good value hotel, which is located at a great location for exploring the Peak District. The rooms are clean and the food is good. There were one or two little niggles that would have improved our experience - no toilet rolls in the room, and poorly organised breakfast (no milk or sugar on the tables, no tea spoons). However, we did enjoy our stay, and the beer is excellent!

Disappointment
Staff were all very helpful, accommodation comfortable for four, however, some areas, notably the table and chairs, could have been cleaner. The bathroom flooring is in a bad state and needs replacing. The kitchen is poorly equipped for what is a self-catering cottage - no oven proof pans or dishes and pans for the hob were, with the exception of a small frying pan, in a terrible state of wear and age - we didn't feel we could use them. Kitchen utensils were not adequate and the one metal spatula needed scouring before being used. Bathroom towels, though plentiful, were worn and thin. All this was very disappointing.

Perfect Location To Access Hathersage And Surroundings
Very nice hotel with spacious room and friendly staff. Pub food downstairs excellent and affordable.

Two small improvements would be - my room did not have any curtains, just blinds that let in a lot of light on long summer days.

Breakfast only served from 8-9, a bit restrictive if a early start is planned or you fancy a lie in!

Otherwise, would highly recommend as a base for a Hathersage stay.

Outdoor pool 3 mins walk away, high street 2 mins walk.

Thanks!

Nice, Could Be Great With A Few Improvements
Hotel is in a really great location for walking in the peaks and visiting nearby sites. Quiet little town but near the station and everything you need and the pub downstairs has a nice feeling and atmosphere.

The room is nice and it has a comfortable bed though the pipes can sometimes be pretty noisy. Breakfast is a little to early (8am-9am) which isn't great when you're having a break, plus there is far to much salt in all the food.

The owners are little odd and sometimes come across as rude and uninterested. With a few changes and a bit more effort this place could be great.

Enjoyable Stay
Stayed in the family room (Alan a dale: 1 double and 2 single beds) which was very spacious and bright. Very central location in town. Swift, no hassle check in. Friendly staff particularly Lucy and Olly who were very welcoming and pleasant. Although free wifi is specified, signal was very poor in this particular room and therefore was not able to use within the room. This was not a big problem as signal was stronger in the bar/ restaurant area downstairs. If I could suggest one area of improvement, this would be the cleanliness. Dust around edges in places and top of cabinets. The bedsheets had old stains and upon close inspection, few small hairs were found. Breakfast was basic: cereals, yogurts, toast, juice, tea, coffee. Restaurant food was ok. Quantity was generous and good value for money, however being a real foodie, the quality of food was a let down. Would stay in accommodation again but would probably give the food a miss.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. Unfortunately we do advertise that there is no wifi in the rooms, just in the public areas downstairs. The issues raised regarding the cleanliness of the room have been looked in to and will be rectified immediately. The breakfast in our opinion is plentiful, offering unlimited cereals, tea, coffee, juices, toast, as well as a full English breakfast, but we are always up for suggestions. We offer a wide range of bar meals, at a reasonable price, and do not trade as a restaurant.

2 Night Stay At The Little John Hotel
Our room the 'Little John' was very spacious with one double and two single beds plus two chairs with a small table. The bed linen and duvets were very good quality and attractive and the beds were extremely comfortable.

The room was let down by the venetian blinds that do not work properly. The room faces east so early sunlight streams into the room. The blinds should be replaced with blackout curtains.

The bathroom again was spacious however the shower needs to be replaced. It will not fix in position and the hose has holes in it which sprays everywhere.

The food was plentiful and generally to a good standard.

Huge full english for breakfast. Had to wait for ages for the toast to cook so maybe a more efficient toaster could be considered. It would be nice if breakfast could be served until 09.30 as we missed it on our second day having had a late night the day before.

All in all a pleasant stay in a welcoming pub with courteous staff.

The Most Horrible Hotel Experience In My Life
Good food, nice accomodation: this is the positive part of this review. Just 1 MAJOR issue: when we wanted to get in after 11PM (after a nice dinner in the village) everything was closed. No response on numerous phone calls, nor knocking on all doors could help us. So eventually we had to book a new hotel in a village nearby. Without our luggages, because they were waiting for us in our room after we checked in. The morning after we went to ask for clarifications, but got simple answers as 'this was mentioned on the booking.com page' (which turned out to be not true at all), 'we cannot refund you', 'this curfew is our policy', 'we can't call the owners because they are on a holiday' and even 'are you sure you knocked on all doors?' (which in my opionon is a huge contradiction to all previous irrelevant questions). So I issued an official complaint at booking.com to get my money back. Nice hotel, but only if you can get in at night...

Pleasantly Surprised
Mildly cool welcome quickly improved by a lovely room and a warm atmosphere in a lovely village setting.

Later in the evening food was tasty and plentiful with staff and locals alike bearing a chatty outlook followed by a nice nights sleep.

Noise from the bar downstairs was negligible and well insulated but the tea-room across the road had a party on till 2AM which put a mild damper on an otherwise enjoyable weekend.

Not As Good As First Impression
There was a group of 12 of us staying for 2 nights over new year.4 of us stayed in loxley cottage,on top of the boiler was a half eaten cake,in 1 of the cupboards in the kitchen was 2 chewed dog balls.on first impression the roomd were ok but they needed a good clean. All of us enjoy a good drink and we all looked forward to new years eve in the bar as it had woodburner making it warm and cosey but the juke box was broken, the only music they had on was on the tv next to the pooltable,so we all went over to the george hotel.we really didnt want to but we thought we had no choice. One of our friends was outside and we assume it was the landlady shouting at a member of staff in front of her how very unprofessional to do this in front of a paying customer.Had good time with friends but wouldnt stay there again.

The juke box is not broken it has bee disconnected for the last 14 months

Lovely Stay
Our room was the nicest room we have stayed in. It was modern and VERY clean! We loved the decor and feel of the room and the bed was so comfy. We also brought our little Yorkshire terrier who was also welcome. Perfect breakfast. Conscientious staff who treat us well. Would love to return soon.

The Limit Of Acceptability
We booked the LJ Hotel as a value for money hotel. Everything was acceptable in terms of cost except that we booked for 3 nights and they did NOT clean either of the 2 rooms we had! When we complained the owner/ landlady would not make herself known to us but sent the bar tender to clean the bathrooms!! He tired, is clearly over worked and didn't really have a clue. The showers were awful due to a major plumbing issue that meant the water went from a spray to a trickle and hot to freezing making showering a real problem. The noise from the plumbing was incredibily loud. There was NO apology for the dirty rooms, the poor plumbing etc. It's definitely more of a Sy Sports bar with rooms than a hotel and calling it a B&B would not be fair to B&Bs. We will never return.

Nice Place To Stay
Had a great stay over at the little John but I feel it was let down by the rude female staff member on the morning we checked out. We thought breakfast was included in the price but was told very harshly that we cant expect breakfast for the price and we must be out by 10am!! very surprised by the poor attitude that put a downer on the stay.

One Night Stay With 9 Year Old Son
My 9 year old son and I stayed one night here. The room was good size, with three beds, and a good size bathroom. Breakfast was included, and was generous, with friendly staff. My son liked the fact that the rooms all had names, connected with the Robin Hood story! We hope to return.

Faulty Towers Comes To Mind
I'm sorry to leave negative feedback, the hotel has the potential to be good, rooms were comfortable and adequate for the price. We were woken 5 times by a radiator banging which the staff had shown us how to deal with when we returned after our night out. Breakfast was poor and there seemed to be a lack of organisation.

Weekend In The Dales
Went to a wedding reception in Brindleford, and needed accommodation close by. Little John was just right. Helful and courteous staff when we arrived: offered to carry our bags, which you don't get at Travelodge! Fabulously deep and comfortable beds - room clean and well-maintained, even if the decor was a bit 1980s. Very good full english breakfast. Highle recommended for the modest cost.

Well Intentioned, But A Bit Random

Lovely Location And Facilities
The rooms are well decorated and the pub has great facilities for an evening in. Bed very comfortable.

However, the radiator in the room kept "knocking" all night long and kept waking me up, meaning I did not have a good nights sleep. When we mentioned it to staff in the morning it became clear other rooms had been doing it too and the staff were aware already. Hopefully they will resolve the issue soon.

Lovely Pub, Great Accomodation, Good Location.
Stopped here for one night in the Alan a Dale room.

The room had a double bed and two single beds, and also a large bathroom.

The room was very clean well maintained. Although one of the black out blinds was missing I can't fault the room at all.

The pub is a lovely pub with a log burner and a good selection of real ales and various lagers. The pub also has a pool table and also sky TV, and gets busy with hikers and visitors to the Peak District. Muddy boots and dogs are welcomed here.

We had dinner here and the food was very good and in good sized portions. The breakfast choice could be better but I can't be too critical.

All in all we enjoyed our stay at The Little John and we'd stay here again.

Very Disappointing Accommodation
We stayed for 3 nights in Loxley Cottage @ £350 and COULD NOT HAVE A SHOWER THE ENTIRE HOLIDAY!! Aug 28-31. The management showed no interest in the problem but eventually acknowledged they were waiting for plumbers to fix the temp guage. It was a new shower which accidentally had only scalding hot water due to the installation error. I have offered the manager time to respond and she has not answered any messages despite saying on the phone that she would look into it. We were attending a wedding and had to manage without being able to wash hair etc. There was a tatty open packet of somebody's cereal on the kitchen bench and the twin beds sagged with creaking metal springs. Apart from a polite young lady who greeted us, the lack of courtesy was shocking.

Nicely decorated, comfortable rooms but not enough shelves/units to put anything on like keys, cosmetics, toiletries etc. tea tray insufficient for 3 guests: one carton of milk between 3 of us and for coffee choice only decaf! Breakfast a very big let down; undercooked meat not enough juice, sugar coffee. Lack of ambiance in the dining room: no background music/TV and the lights were switched off making it difficult to see your breakfast! £100 per night? Won't be staying again for this quality. So So
Room was nice but the pub and breakfast area need a good old scrub! Grubby isn't the word. Dirty coffee mug,my bowl had stuck to the place mat when I tried to move it,no music so was quite award just sat in silence with other guest munching away. Every door in that place slammed really loudly so thus kept mr away as people came and went sausages on my breakfast were borderline cooked. Cutters eas grubby.was not impressed at all and I went hungry.early checkout is a bit much too. Such a shame as the room was nice and fab location but things such as food and things your expecting people to eat/drink from were not good. Brilliant bakery over the road that did me a lovely bacon con was glad it was there!

Impressed
We were at a wedding on the Saturday and needed somewhere for the night to avoid a long late night trip home. Booked well in advance, we didn't really do much shopping around but have to say it was an excellent choice. Plenty of parking in the pub car park, staff were very friendly and welcoming. We went for a room for 4 adults, beds were really comfortable and the room was very clean and spacious, there was a large bathroom with shower over the bather, again in good condition. Room had large TV and tea/coffee facilities. Breakfast was included the next morning between 8 & 9am, with cereals, juice, toast and full English. We would definitely use this accommodation again if we found ourselves in the same area. Very good value for money +++++++++++++

Good Accommodation, Shame About The Staff
The accommodation was lovely, all newly refurbished. Beds comfortable. However, for self-catering accommodation, there was not really enough stuff in the kitchen - barely enough cups to drink from, no trays for the oven. As the owner just looking at your review You were a party booking that was made between myself and Nick and am amazed at your comments when you stayed three nights spoke to myself every day and the only item disscussed was the shavers light was not working which i explained the bathroom is having a re fit . However we feel sad that you complain on email and yet to myself and staff your organiser Nick said how you all enjoyed your stay .I am lost for words.

I\'d Go Back Tomorrow!!
We stayed at the Little John Inn again for our Honeymoon as we enjoyed it so much when we last stayed in November. It really is everything you'd want from a break in the Peaks; beautiful rooms in a quiet, quaint village. It is a great base for exploring or simply relaxing and taking in the local area. The food is outstanding; My partner is a chef (and thus a finicky eater) and he refuses to eat anywhere else when in the area. The prices are very reasonable especially when you consider how stylish and modern the rooms are (I've previously paid more to stay in rooms like this elsewhere). The staff are amazing, we struggled with the shower in our cottage and the manageress (who at that time was helping serve meals) came straight from the kitchen to fix it. There were no quibbles or complaints. The bar gets full on a Saturday as you'd expect, but this isn't till around 7pm and quietens down by 10pm. The locals are friendly folk and most frequent the bar every week (we recognised a few this time). All in all, a fantastic place to stay whatever you're wanting to get out of a break.

Weekend Break
Very comfortable bed - excellent breakfast both for quality and quantity. One or two issues regarding attention to detail that prevent me from giving five stars - nothing serious e.g. no towels in bathroom at time of arrival which was swiftly addressed and the towel rail was not attached to the wall correctly so fell off when the towel was put on it, as I said, nothing serious but a bit more attention to detail would have made it 5 stars.

Two Night Walking Stop Over
I had a room for four with one double and two single beds. I was going to sleep in the double bed but the sheets were grubby (probably had been washed but there was a big brown stain on one which was a bit off putting). I slept in one of the single beds instead which was fine and comfortable. Bathroom facilities were adequate but the never a shelf in these places put your toiletry bag. I had a room on to the car park which meant it was a little noisy on the Friday, but then you would expect that at a pub. Breakfasts were very good but the meals I had in the pub in the evenings were just ok. It served it's purpose and for the price I would use it again as a stop over for walking.

Poor Organisation
Rooms not serviced, very poor breakfast on day 1, back entrance to hotel very dirty ( bucket of cigarette ends is almost the first thing you see, no blind at skylight to keep bedroom dark, ran out of black sheep before we managed to get one pint each.

Lovely Stay In Relaxed Setting
Stayed for one night in Loxley Cottage. This was a great base with which to explore Hathersage and surrounding areas. It was great that the cottage and the pub were dog friendly. Great food in the pub, the staff work very hard. Overall, a lovely stay, we will return!!!

Good But Could Be Better.
The room was great, lots of space, good TV and bath!

However we thought it wasnt the most welcoming place. Staff were not rude, but not friendly really either. Felt bit like after thought.

Also we thought the food was average. Breakfast wasnt the best quality and seemed a bit disorganised.

But overall we liked our room and it was a great location for us at that price!

All Fur Coat And No Knickers
We have recently returned from the Peak District after a four day Easter break staying in the Little John Hotel in Hathersage. During the days we enjoyed the favourable Springtime weather by canoeing, climbing and walking before returning to the Hotel each evening for an experience which really was a game of two halves. After arriving at the hotel we quickly realised that 'checking in' meant we would wait in turn behind ruddy nosed locals having there umpteenth pints filled and at our turn, we would be handed a set of keys and whisked upstairs by the barman in between his pint pulling duties. It has to be said, that the room on initial impression was very nice indeed. We were staying in 'Maid Marian', a double with en suite shower room. Pleasantly decorated, almost showroomesque, we would soon realise that there was unfortunately more to this room, than met the eye. For brevity sake, I will summarise here. The toilet did not flush correctly, the shower door came off it's hinges each time it was opened, and the basin flooded each time it was used. In the bedroom itself, the right hand bedside lamp could only be used if the broadband router, yes broadband router which lay on the floor, was unplugged. I made do without the light to afford other guests the use of the internet! Rooms were not cleaned during the day, ie. bins remained unemptied and we had to ask for another loo roll and a change of towels on the third day. The very large LCD television on the wall did not work upon our arrival at the hotel and it was reported to 'Mrs B', a general hand/chef/receptionist/cleaner. This was not passed on to any other member of staff and after a second day we reported it again, to a barman/receptionist. Upon arriving back at the room for a third day to find the television still not working we sought out the manageress, a disinterested person whose response to the complaint was 'I assumed it had been sorted out because I hadn't heard back from anyone'. After pressing the issue, along with concerns over breakfast service (the icing on the cake to follow), The manageress proceeded to send one of her regulars, who was in for a pint, up to our room to see if he could repair our tele, which unsurprisingly, he could not. A small tele propped onto the radiator was offered which also failed to function. After thanking the barman who it was clear to us, was bearing the brunt of the organisational catastophe, he brought us a bottle of wine to apologise on behalf of the hotels shortcomings. The wine was a kind gesture from him, however so far off the mark to rectify the attitude and behaviour of the management. Had this have been the sum of our experience then we would have left disgruntled at most, however the most disappointing times of our visit came each morning, sat in the bar?? at breakfast. Again, a summary. Waiting over 20 minutes to be offered tea/coffee and have our order taken, whilst the chef/waitress was busy cooking others meals. No sugar out for breakfast, however a ready supply of vinegar at each table. Fried breakfast was grim, to say the least. The second day I opted for a bacon sandwich, and was brought poached eggs on toast, shortly after being 'offered' some white toast after the waitress had made a mistake on another couples order. I left unfed on one morning after my partner had been served her breakfast, and I had not, and after waiting 10 minutes further and confirming my order with the waitress/chef who had forgotten that I had asked for a bacon sandwich, I left breakfast. After making a complaint to the manageress about this, her response was "well thats not what I heard", which was well in keeping with her general attitude and demeanour. In four sittings of breakfast, we requested the exchange of at least 8 pieces of cutlery and crockery which in some cases, had food still on them, and on one occasion the response from a young extremely disinterested waitress was "well, that must have been the night shift". The whole experience for a couple, who appreciate value for money was completely sub standard, and if the hotel had not very conveniently been pre paid via booking.com, then they would not have received their asking price from us, nor did they deserve it. Please think twice about booking this hotel if you are looking for something more than a barely functional place to put your head, whilst looking at pretty wallpaper.

Lovely Modern Bedrooms, Great Location
We've stayed at the Little John probably about 8 times over as many years, and we will definitely be returning to stay again. The location is perfect - right in the centre of Hathersage in the heart of the Peak District. Close to shops, cafes, pubs and eateries, but also walks/outdoor activities right on your doorstep (including Stanage Edge which is a great walk you can easily do straight from the hotel). The price for rooms is also very reasonable compared to others we have stayed at in the area.

We have mostly stayed in the rooms over the pub, but last weekend we had one of the cottages, Squires. The bedrooms are all lovely, having undergone recent upgrades. The decoration is modern, beds are very comfortable, and bathrooms roomy with good showers.

Squires cottage is very well laid out and feels very spacious, as well as having everything you could possibly need during the stay. It's been well thought out and has plenty of seating room in both the lounge and kitchen/dining room. I was very impressed by the kitchen having everything I'd need to make a meal (unlike I have experienced in other self catered cottages).

Despite the bedrooms being over the pub, and the cottages being right next to the pub, they really don't appear to be noisy.

The hotel is very dog friendly, both in the rooms/cottages and in the pub itself. We always bring our 2 Labradors with us when we stay here, and they certainly have a great time. Little things like having a dog bowl available in the cottage kitchen and a stairgate to stop them going up the stairs in the cottage were very helpful.

I can't comment on the food as we didn't eat in the pub on this trip, and the head chef has changed since last time we ate here. That said the menu has lots of choice including many options for veggies/gluten free eaters, and I did see some delicious looking meals one day this weekend when we were having some beers in the pub. Oh, and there's always a good selection of local ales :)

Fantastic Value
I booked the Little Johns Hotel purely because we were attending a function right next door and all we wanted was a bed for the night... I was told by the chap on the telephone that muddy boots and dogs were welcome so I was not expecting anything flash or comfortable! We were shown to our room on arrival and was pleasantly surprised to find a very stylish rather 'up market' spacious room. Excellent value for money at just £75 including breakfast!

Good Value For Money
The Hotel is positioned perfectly for outdoor ventures in the heart of the Peak District. The staff are friendly and food is very good as well as being reasonably priced. The rooms are a decent size and have all of the necessary facilities. The only disappointing part was the allowance of dogs in the dining facility and the main residential part of the hotel, in particular when they are ill behaved and set the alarm off at very antisocial hours when going out to do their business.

Anniversay Weekend Spoilt
we stayed for one night

The room and location was very good but was overshadowed by the events of the weekend

We were awoken at 2.00 in the morning by members

Of staff shouting gigling and what seemed like jumping

Up and down in room above us ( we know it was staff and not guests as we heard them open up the door key code next to our room

This was totally unacceptable and the noise carried on for over half an hour , we then couldn't get back to sleep and were shattered next day

The burglar alarm then went off twice at 7 30 am

As well as this we had dinner the night before here and on one meal were informed that there wasn't any mozzarella cheese a major part of the meal we were not offered anything else in it's place , we should have been told before the meal so we could have ordered something elae . The next morning breakfast we were informed that the coffee machine wasn't working and were given two sachets of coffee and a pot of hot water which we didn't think was good , the chap bringing out the breakfast didn't seem to know what he was doing and kept asking was this food ours,

This spoilt our weekend away !!

As the owner I really appologize for this inconvenience. I feel really embarased about this situation and please accept my deepest appologies. The staff involved have been dealt with and as a result one of them has been dismissed. I would like to offer yourself and your wife a free accomodation for a weekend of your choice as a way of appologising. But this particular weekend my partner and I were away for the weekend ourselves. I am so sorry that you havent recieved a response but this was due to staff hiding this review. Ok
Our first impression was not the best, the lady who met us was not terribly helpful. However the house-keeper was able to have our room ready ahead of the usual check-in time which we were grateful of. The room itself was lovely. Clean and with everything you need and expect. My only criticism of the room was the large skylight. Fortunately staying in February its not such an issue, but as it had no blind, it would have been too light in the summer months. Breakfast was OK, although disorganised. We were served ahead of others who had ordered before us. Overall, the experience was OK.

Mixed Review
The room was fine, comfortable, warm and a reasonable price. It was pretty quiet even with the pub downstairs. The service when we checked in and breakfast time was poor. There was only one guy running the place it appeared who had only been there a week and seemed t have had no training. It took far too long to check us in. Far too long to get the right/any cooked breakfast as the chef was cooking meals one thing at a time it seemed despite there being quite a few people waiting. If you are catering for several visitors at once you need a better system.

Comfortable Room, Good Food
The room was very big, warm and comfortable, and the food was very good. It was great that it was so dog friendly. Very minor points would be better fitting blinds in sheriffs room and glass for water would be nice with the tea cups and be wary of the bass from the juke box if you are a light sleeper, it didn't stop us though and the amount of cigarette ends and having to walk through the smokers who shelter just inside wasn't very nice. However the staff work extremely hard to ensure everyone has a good stay, and a special shoutout for Pete with his quizzes and raffles. It is very ghis value for money in a great location, so we would recommend it for a good friendly stay in the peaks

Stayed In The \"liittle John\" Room At The Little John
On arrival we were greeted at the bar and taken to our room, with instructions of breakfast times etc and an offer of anything else to please ask, then left in peace with no hassle.

The room was very spacious, clean and equipped for a double plus one, tea and coffee facilities were available, everything ready to relax after a long journey.

At breakfast we had a friendly greeting, sitting beside a welcoming warning fire, to savor it was heaven, and the young lad who served us was excellent and accommodating. I asked for just scrambled eggs and they were perfect. with a proper full pot of tea and good sized cup, just what was needed.

Day two was just as good, a selections of cereals, toasts, and cooked, we had the full English and we were not disappointed, the staff today were different yet just as good. warm and friendly.

Overall our stay was pleasant, welcoming and relaxing, we had booked our stay primarily to visit family living locally. A good central base.

I cannot fault anything from our welcome, to the very helpful accommodating staff, the room, bed, cleanliness, the food, I would stay here again. Also finding you are dog friendly is a bonus for next time.

Three Night Stay At \'little John Hotel\' Over Xmas 2014.
From booking in, and until leaving, I thoroughly enjoyed my B&B stay at this hotel.

The hotel is clean and bright, and my twin en-suite bedroom was quite adequate for a single person. The food menu is very good, and the breakfast was excellent.

In addition, the friendliness and helpfulness of the hotel owner Stefanie, her mother, and the rest of the staff was brilliant. Though I am partially crippled in both hands and feet, everyone went out of their way to help me if needed.

Even the customers were friendly, and I would happily stay here again in the future.

Basic, Good Location And Reasonable Price
The cottage is in an excellent location, close to all amenities and pubs. The price we paid was also good value. The pub is on your doorstep offering good value food and drinks.

However, the cottage was a bit on the unkept side, for example the floors were dirty and the whole place needed a good clean. The heating was not working and we ended up googling how to fix the boiler as the staff could not help. The shower water was barely warm/cold at best, I only ventured in once it was so unpleasant. Twin beds were squeaky as were the doors.

It is basic, but as a base to sleep it is fine (bedding and towels were good quality). The kitchen is not really designed to be used for cooking meals, but there is a washing machine (the hob did not light).

Overnight Stay
We are a group of four, shall we say, mature ladies. After a lovely day visitingg Chatsworth we arrived at LJ to find our room/suite far exceeded our expectations, large room, dual aspect, lovely bedding and a spacious bathroom? We joined in the quiz in the friendly bar. We asked for slight variations on the menu and that was no problem, I ordered the sword fish and this was over cooked (I didn't complain) we spent a very quiet night apart from the fire alarm going off at 3.30am. We were surprised when we came down to breakfast that so many other people were staying as we had not heard any noise at all. Breakfast was plentiful and well cooked. I have already recommended LJ to colleagues at work.

Good Value Overnight Stop
I stayed at the hotel overnight on 15th Nov 14.

On arrival I was checked in quite quickly and shown to my room. I had booked a Twin with breakfast included for £45.00. The room was well presented, very clean, though not particularly spacious. There was an en-suite bathroom that was nearly as big as the bedroom....a nice change! It also had a shower cubicle where the water was piping hot and came out at a good rate.

At breakfast I declined the normal "fry up" (which, viewing the plates of other guests was enormous) and settled for a couple of eggs and some toast. That's the positive side. On the downside was the fact that there was no separate checking in facility, but guests have to go to the bar (which was quite crowded) and stand there with your luggage whilst being looked over by people drinking beer. I find that quite disconcerting. The other point I would make is that I had to ask where the Fire exit was from my room when, I think this should have been explained to me by the gentleman who accompanied me there.

These are small observations rather than criticisms, and in no way detracts from the fact, that the hotel provides good value for money.

Thankyou for your review. As a small hotel we have not got a reception area we do apologise .Sorry about you not being told about fire exits the reason for this is because there is a big fire sign on the backs of all our bedroom doors. But because you have brought it to our attention all customers will now be shown on arrival were to go . Thankyou again for your review

Great Value, Recommended
This was our first stay at The Little John and we were very satisfied.

Ample parking, friendly staff and decent/acceptable pub food. Our room was clean and looked recently refurbished, the decor was a little loud for our taste but the owners have clearly made an effort stamping their own style on it which we feel is better than the usual beige/dull often found at this price. Also, we won the quiz in the bar and were rewarded with a free round of drinks which was very unexpected and gratefully received! A great breakfast and good coffee served with a smile set us up perfectly for our day on the trails around Ladybower. We would definitely recommend this hotel, at the price we paid we can't imagine there being a better alternative in the area.

Loved It 3 Great Days
What loverly dog friendly accomodation.

Set in a loverly village with post office, banks, beautiful bakers and many other shops to stroll around.

Fantastic walks very local and some challenging ones on the doorstep.Wonderful drive and views.

I was concerned as the first time taken our dennis on a doggy break but I needent have been.

Our room was roomy and spaceous with loverly high ceilings and wooden floors, tastefully decorated and wonderful double windows. The whole of the upstairs has been in my husbands words a great renovation for an old property.

Our understanding is that the ensuites and cottages are a recent addition to the the pub being completley renovated by the landlady.Steph what a loverly friendly down to earth lady if you have a problem please let her know as her pub is her passion and she only wants to please the visitors. The lattes are loverly, the cheese ploughmans delicous and the sausages and mash warmed the cockles nicely.Breakfast in the morning warm and hearty...would love some homemade porrage but im being cheeky.

I may sound biased but I have no connection with the propriotor we just had the most amazing and friendly time we managed to stay another night. Our dog was made to feel really welcome and the locals of Hathersage are a real nice bunch.Cant wait to stay again.

Fantastic Little Find With A Gluten Free Menu
We chose Little John Hotel purely because of the price as we had booked a day of rock climbing and a spa day in Buxton.

We arrived around 6pm and welcomed by some friendly locals in a busy bar. At first I was a little dubious about where we had booked, but as we were shown to the room, we were pleasantly surprised. The corridor and rooms were nicely decorated and clean.

We were shown to the Robin Hood room which had a double and single bed with an ensure shower room. Unfortunately the towels had not been in the room on arrival, but this was quickly rectified.

The water temperature in the shower was rather temperamental though, taking a long time to get warm and had bursts of cold water. I suppose it's good for circulation ;-)

We went down for dinner around 7.45pm and was very pleasantly surprised they had a sign reading 'gluten free available' as my partner is gluten intolerant. It really did make our stay! There was a range of 6-8 different gluten free meals available, plus many others on the standard & specials menu. We opted for a mixed grill & lamb chops. Both meals were very well portioned and very nice!

We then joined in the pub quiz, had a few more drinks and went to bed.

Breakfast the following morning was great, with plenty of gluten free options available again!

Overall a very pleasant stay. But I would advise advertising that they are gluten free as it makes such a huge difference!!

Solid building, Solid value! Stayed on a walking trip with a friend. Room a little small maybe but perfecly acceptable. Clean, warm; decor a bit busy. Solid value. Good beer and solid menu. Breakfast enormous but the lady who did everything magnificently at breakfast, at times wasn't aware guests were arriving as she was cooking. Excellent
We stayed one night in The Little John Inn, and I could not say anything negative about the place. Staff is super friendly and helpful, the hotel is beautiful and clean, the location is perfect. I was amazed by the "superwoman" who works there, who checked us in, at the same time worked behind the bar, took food orders and served dinner, for our request brought us an extra bed to the room, dealt with a broken down boiler all at the same time. To my biggest surprise she was also there early in the morning to serve breakfasts and later to clean the restaurant too, all with the biggest smile on her face! Amazing.

Thank you.

Good Value B&b
We have just got back from a one night stay at the Little John Inn. We were actually at a wedding down the road so unfortunately we didn't really get to try the food. This was a disappointment as the food looked fantastic. Our room was great and very clean and had everything you could possibly need for a short stay. We also missed breakfast (it was quite early and we'd had a long day drinking the day before!). All of the staff were very accommodating and pleasant. The only thing I would say, is that our room overlooked the road and it is on the corner of quite a busy road so we were woken by the traffic noise quite early, or so it felt. We did have our window open as it was quite a warm night, I am sure it wouldn't have been any where as noisy had we shut the window. All in all a good value B&B in a good location.

Convenient Base For The Peak District
Friendly staff, excellent location, and reasonable rates. Oh, and good beer on tap downstairs.

Our experience was really positive and the room was excellent: large, very quiet, and very comfortable. The public spaces could use a bit more attention: the back door to the carpark and self-catering rooms is a bit of an ashtray (since it's the back of the pub), and an ironing board seems to have been permanently installed in the hallway, amongst other minor things. And the breakfast coffee needs some work. This is, however, a country hotel so none of these were really issues for us.

We stayed in the Dungeon room, which was nicely decorated, and warm whilst the heating was on, but we found that once the heating had gone off that because of the high ceiling the room was ever so slightly on the chilly side, but we still nevertheless enjoyed our stay there and we would seriously look to go again, as we enjoyed ourselves despite the weather being atrocious on the saturday when we arrived.

Valentine Weekend
Arriving in heavy rain, we were shown to an immaculate bedroom with enormous bed. Good beer, extensive menu of competent pub food, hot cooked breakfast prepared freshly with tasty bsacon and sausage and bread which tasted of bread - an unusual delicacy in this price range. Would book there again - cannot blame them for foul weather!

Little John Pub And Hotel
We were not disappointed with our stay, we only wished the weather had been better! The room was modern and very comfortable, with a large tv and spacious bathroom. The only couple of negatives were that the room was over the disco area of the pub. It wasn't very noisy but there was the distinct thud thud thud until closing time. Also, the bed was very comfortable but for some reason we both felt like we were falling out. This room has lovely high ceilings with a large skylight and the rain was hammering on it all night! This wasn't a fault of the room though. Had the choice of a full English in the morning although we just had scrambled eggs.

Friendly local pub, the sleeping accommodation was immaculate, bed so comfy you don't want to leave it. Food is good pub grub, breakfast was good but seats could do with re-upholstering. Good stay and will go again.

New Year 2013
we stayed at the Little John on 30/31st December 2013, the rooms are lovely large with ensuite, we had a problem with the T.V. so the moved us to another room this was no problem, the rooms were a bit cold until heating came on, could do with the heating on longer. food is cheap and cheerfull, people very fiendly and helpfull. Dico on New Years eve so if you want quiet maybe not the best time to go. On the whole we have a great stay & breakfast was enjoyable and plenty.

Entertaining
We turned up preparing for a big walk the following day and noticed that the pub was hosting a Halloween fancy dress party and disco, so with bin bags, gaffa tape and make up we came 2nd! A excellent night and accommodating staff! Lovely rooms and breakfast. Thanks!

Great Cottage Marred By Dodgy Hot Water
We had a lovely stay in Squires, one of the Little John's self-catering cottages. Having a separate bedroom for the kids was a great plus, as was simply having space, and having the pub next door meant no cooking. The cottage was comfortable and well equipped with just a few minor quibbles - a frying pan that made eggs and bacon very difficult, and a hot water supply that somehow never seemed to reach the shower. However, overall it was great value for money and we would definitely come again - probably in summer.

Great Base For Peaks
Beautiful comfortable room, spacious bathroom, (very lively) pub serves food and drink. Downsides was that good was expensive, and breakfast is only served between 8am-9am. Other than that, good value, superb location, would return.

Pleasant Stay With Friendly Staff
I have stayed in this hotel twice now. I find it in a great location for us. The room we stayed in was The Maid Marian. This room is clean, tidy and very well maintained. The decor is of high quality, with excellent en-suite facilities. Its for us as they allow our black Labrador and other dogs in the building. Don't let this out you off if you're a non dog owner as the place doesn't smell of wet dog like you would think. Breakfast is great and all you could ask for. All in all 10 out of 10. Will defiantly be staying again in the future.
