Immaculate Comfortable Old Style
A comfortable and enjoyable stay. We were with my son and his 11 year old daughter. The rooms, beds and facilities were spot on and the breakfast and dinner lovely. The Edwardian feel was very much our style within the spotless and immaculately maintained rooms. The temperamental pool table was a big hit with us.All we needed was in easy walking distance. A good find.

Welcoming And Relaxing Break
My wife and I had a very pleasant and enjoyable, five night, stay at the Summerhill Hotel. The room we stayed in was very spacious, clean and comfortable with a large en-suite bathroom.

The breakfast menu was quite extensive and the hot food was cooked to order and was delicious. The service was excellent and the staff attentive but not intrusive. All the staff/managers/owners we met were very pleasant and helpful. The off street parking was a great advantage as the approach roads are quite narrow. The hotel met all our expectations and we had a very welcoming and relaxing break.

Great Family Holiday Experience
We stayed for a week with two small children, and were very well looked after, despite having booked at short notice. The hotel is very clean and beautifully presented, with a nice touch being served tea in the lounge on arrival. All staff members were very helpful, and catered particularly well for our daughter who has special needs. The meals were very tasty and highlights were the chips (seriously) and seafood cocktail. The location is very convenient for nearby park and beach. We would definitely consider coming back for a return visit. Thank you, Debbie and staff for a great family holiday experience.

Enjoyable Weekend
Spent another super weekend at the Summerhill. Don't bother going out for dinner when there is excellent food served in the dining room overlooking Goodrington Sands. Well stocked bar with good selection of real ales. At this family run hotel, they know all the local places and events to keep you busy after the best breakfast available.

Highest recommendation possible.

Summerhill Hotel Brill
My wife and I had a very comfortable stay at the Summerhill Hotel over 2 & 3rd of August. Our room with a balcony was very clean, bed very comfortable, and balcony with table and chairs ideal for a drink and savour the riviera atmosphere with bamboos and palms close by. The breakfast was superb and so too the hospitality. We were welcomed with offers of tea or coffee. This is a really nice place to stay. I would certainly recommend.

Lovely Location
Although Paignton is a typical English seaside resort, the Summerhill is located in a quiet residential area, but with a sea view and easy walking distance to the beach. The bus and rail station (also Dart Valley line) are within 15 mins walk.

We had a front room with a view of the sea and a sitting area. Great hotel!

Lovely Stay
A lovely cup of tea on arrival.

Clean comfortable room with tea making facilities which included selection of fruit teas and bottled water. En-suite had large shower.

We had a balcony which was lovely to sit out.

Tasty breakfast and the evening meals (which we had several) were delicious.

Nice bar area for drinks (we had several of these as well).

Short walk to the beach.

Car left in car park for our stay and made use of frequent local transport.

Lovely Food And Quiet Location...
Lovely welcome...

Beautiful food, evening meal was absolutely fantastic, Mixed seafood in garlic dressing, sea bass, steak, compliments to the chef..

If I had any criticism it would be too soft a bed and pillows, but that is my choice the hotel cannot be held responsible for that.....please note..

The towels could do with a spruce up, they seemed a bit tired...

Overall yes we would use it again, and yes I recommend it...

Can't really find enough superlatives to use for this hotel. Absolutely first class. Everything about it is top notch from the furniture and fittings to the food, staff and setting. Situated in a very pleasant and quiet neighbourhood and close to Goodrington Sands Steam Railway stop it is ideal for town and anyone wanting to visit the heritage steam railway. I had to call them a few hours after I left as I left an item in our room. They had it in the office and offered to return it the next working day. Very impressive on every level.

A Good Find
In need of a short break, my wife searched the internet for a hotel in Devon. It had to have facilities for disabled guests as I have great mobility problems. The Summ erhill Hotel offered such facilities and was available when we wanted to go, so we booked. We arrived and were immediately struck by the welcome that we received. We were offered tea, and help with our luggage. We were shown to our room, which was clean and bright, with a lovely walk-in shower, which was an essential for me.

We dined at the hotel each night. The menu was fine and the food very good. Breakfasts were equally good with more choices than I thought possible. Very good friendly hotel.

I would thoroughly recommend sraying there.

Great to revisit childhood holidays and to see how the owners have maintained everything that is good about traditional family-run hotels but with all that the guests of 2016 expect. We stayed at Summerhill for 2weeks with our grandchildren aged 8&10yrs. We arrived to such a warm welcome with coffee and biscuits, juice for the children. Our rooms were lovely and clean, tea, coffee hot chocolate and bottled water available every day. Rooms cleaned every day. Comfy beds fresh towels and toiletries.

Summerhill is a beautiful house and only a five minute walk to the beach.

Breakfast is something to look forward to, excellent food with plenty of choice and enough to keep you going until lunch. We had packed lunches made and they were fantastic well worth it if you intend to be out and about or spending the day on the beach.

Our grandchildren loved the games room and had to have a game of pool most evenings.

This is a nice welcoming family run hotel where nothing is too much trouble and their aim is to ensure you have a truly enjoyable stay.

Thank you so much for making our holiday even better.

Wonderful Family Run Hotel - Highly Recommend
We have just returned from a two night stay at this marvellous family run hotel in south Devon.

From the moment we arrived to the moment we left we were treated with kindness and consideration by all of the staff.

Our room was beautifully appointed with fantastic views over Torbay. It had complimentary toiletries, various tea's and coffee, an extremely comfortable bed and a well equipped bathroom. The room was spotlessly clean and tidy, was tastefully decorated, peaceful and very quiet.

Our only regret is that our stay was too short and that we only had chance to eat in the restaurant on one occasion; the one meal we had was very well prepared and presented. The fantastic breakfast was very well received and certainly prepared us for the day ahead.

We will certainly return to the Summerhill Hotel in the near future and would highly recommend it.

Our son who was working at the airshow, was made equally welcome when he joined us for a relaxing evening meal, he was also very impressed with the service. A very comfortable bed, with clean crispy bed linen, provided a relaxing nights sleep. It is so peaceful at this Hotel you cannot be anything but refreshed after your stay. Wonderful Hotel With All The Perks
We were greeted with a wonderful smile and a hot beverage. The room was a good size and bed to match. We were lucky to have a room with a small terrace, which we did use. The Bathroom was also a nice treat with its multi functioned shower and clean lines.

The room had a TV, Radio, kettle, hair dryer, coffee tea milk etc, but also bottled water. that was very welcome during the night.

The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Breakfast was a good start to the day, with a good helping of toast.

The Hotel and room was very clean and tidy, as well as the exterior and surrounding gardens. Parking was ample.

The location is within easy reach of all the surrounding beaches and easy walking distance to the town of Paignton.

I would recommend this hotel and next time when i am in the area use the Hotel again.

Thank you for a relaxing comfortable stay.

Already Looking Forward To Returning!
Returned to the Summerhill over Easter 2016 after having spent many a childhood holiday at the hotel!

The hotel location is great, just minutes from Goodrington Park and the beach front with an equally short walk into Paignton. There is plenty of parking which is great to be able to go out for the day and not have to worry about not getting a space when you return!

We stayed in the Patricia room which was lovely and spacious with large bay windows providing fabulous views out to sea, a relaxing seated area plus a comfy king size bed really complemented the room. The en-suite is a good size with a powerful shower over a nice bath tub!

The dining room, again, has fantastic sea views to enjoy whilst having breakfast/dinner at the hotel and there is plenty to choose from in both menus! We had 3 delicious evening meals and also enjoyed pre (& post) dinner drinks in the well stocked bar. The breakfast was equally delicious with good size portions to set you up for the day!

The Summerhill is a wonderful family run hotel - warm and welcoming, clean, comfortable with a relaxing and friendly ambience. We are looking forward to our next visit already!

Lovely Stay
We stayed for 2 nights in this charming, slightly old fashioned hotel. The room was comfortably warm and so were the beds. a nice choice of teas in the room. The lady who runs the hotel was lovely and friendly and chatted just the right amount to us at breakfast. We never felt rushed. The breakfast was fantastically cooked,to order, and was the best English breakfast that we had ever had in a hotel. The hotel is in a good, quiet location minutes away fron the sea.We would definately come back.

Visited for 5 nights in August. Welcome was very nice had coffee in lounge and a tour of the hotel. Very clean and comfortable. Food great, service friendly and cheerful. Room 7 very well decorated with balcony - would recommend. Only 5 min walk to beach through the park. Beach split into two parts, one being dog friendly during the summer season. Wonderful Stay At The Summerhill Hotel
A spacious Hotel, furnished to a high standard, spacious bedroom and en-suite, having a comfortable bed and lovely crisp sheets gave us a relaxing nights sleep. A substantial breakfast cooked to order from a wide varied menu set us up for the day. All the staff were wonderfully friendly, nothing too much trouble, to do or get for you. You Just Won\'t Find Better!!
This hotel has everything - a great location, the hotel exudes warmth and friendliness, it has food that will feed your soul as well as your stomach and this hotel feels like a real home from home. Everyone is smiling but genuinely so and the family atmosphere and the owner's willingness to go above and beyond what is required from a guest makes this the absolute perfect place to base a holiday from in the Torbay area and I haven't even mentioned how quiet and comfy the rooms are or the great view yet. Plenty of parking, a lift for the suitcase struggles and a treasure trove of a pool room make Summerhill Hotel an absolute delight of a find and I know I will be going back there again with, and without, my children. Thank you so much Debbie and family for helping to make our family holiday just brilliant.

British Hospitality At It\'s Best
Had to book at short notice and was concerned as to what might be available at the height of the summer season. We we pleasantly surprised to find such a clean hotel with was decorated in a very traditional style with lots of beautiful painting and varied art works.

It is a family run hotel but with a quality of customer care you would expect to get at a five star establishment.

The purpose of our visit was to attend a funeral and so the care and attention we received was most appreciated.

The rooms were well appointed and we had great on suite shower rooms. The food was excellent and breakfast set us up for the day.

my feeling is that a lot of family hotels could benefit from seeing the way this place

operates.

A Superb Hotel
We are so glad we booked the Summerhill Hotel for a three night stay. It is situated in Goodrington Sands with it's lovely walks and views and the owners and staff go that extra mile to make sure you enjoy your stay. Our room was very clean and spacious, and there was not just your normal tea and coffee supplied. We also had fruit teas, hot chocolate, and bottled water. The breakfast was amazing, a good menu selection, well cooked and hit the spot. I had porridge followed by bacon, scrambled eggs, sausage and then toast and jam.The restaurant is well laid out and the staff very attentive. There is a lovely view of the sea whilst you eat. We did not try the evening meals as we tended to eat out late afternoon but the menu certainly tempted us. There is more than ample car parking and the grounds are well kept with seating areas if you want to sit outside. Goodrington Sands is a lovely relaxing place. We also liked Brixham with it's gift shops, cafes on the seafront etc. and found lots of other nice places to drive to. We would certainly return to the Summerhill Hotel when next in the area.

Great Place To Stay
We stayed from 15-22June. This very comfortable and clean hotel is family run with pride, a warm welcome, and good service. Breakfast menu is extensive, with hot dishes cooked to order to a high standard. Evening menu is equally good, & we dined there twice. We enjoyed fast wifi in our room which was probably the furthest away from public areas, and appreciated built in USB charging sockets in our room (not in all rooms yet). Has good views of Goodrington and sea. Beach and park are 3mins walk away with just one short 70m slope between.

Location enjoys good transport links. LocalLink bus route 25 stops 30m from hotel & runs to/from town (6x Mon-Sat). However an 8minute walk to the main Dartmouth Road gives access to several more bus services including route 12 (Brixham-Paignton-Torquay) running up to every 10mins with just 5mins and 3stops to Paignton Bus Station and the town centre.

We found the Summerhill an excellent base for exploring the Torbay area, and commend it to others.

I was staying here whilst working locally and the staff couldn't have been any more helpful or accommodating.

It is a family run hotel, in a very quiet area of Paignton, but only 50 yards from the park and seafront. I was working afternoons and late into the evening, and they were more than happy to provide me with supper in my room waiting for my return after work.

Clean tidy rooms and the grounds of the hotel are ideal with a quaint seated area under shade, an terrific south facing veranda looking out towards the sea front in the sunshine. Plenty of parking, and a superb hearty breakfast that kept me going all day.

Will definitely use again if back down that way and recommend it to people I know.

5 Stars
I stayed 3 nights at the Summerhill & my overall impression was that someone had made a list of all the good things they expect from a hotel & put every one of the points into practice.

This hotel cannot be praised highly enough. I’m already planning a visit next Spring.

We were offered tea or coffee on arrival in a very comfortable lounge before checking in. There was no rush to get us registered & off to our rooms. This was how our stay was to continue. All the staff were genuinely friendly & welcoming & always had time for us whether it was in the dining room or elsewhere. Nothing seemed too much trouble.

All areas in the hotel were remarkably clean. Often in hotels some carpets can feel dirty or you see old & tired areas… not at the Summerhill ! Everywhere was spick & span.

The hotel itself is charming with several patio areas around the property & my room had a lovely balcony. You turn a corner & there's another sunny spot to sit & admire the view…. Oh & what a view especially from the dining room/bar where they even have a large telescope for the guests to use

The food was excellent, fresh produce expertly cooked & presented .The breakfast & dinner menus were extensive & all the meals, we ate breakfast & dinner each day during our stay, wouldn’t have gone amiss in a Michelin starred restaurant. Bravo chef !

My bedroom was very cosy. The bed amazingly comfortable with lovely crisp sheets, perfect pillows & a very fluffy duvet. I have to add that the shower was incredibly easy to use, unlike some hotels where you get attacked by a torrent of too hot or freezing water ! .A small point but it makes such a difference.

The parking is good too & I would recommend the overflow car park as easier to negotiate if you have a big car.

Thank you so much for making our stay so delightful & see you in 2015.

The view from the dining room over the coast is special and the guests are given such a warm welcome that any single visitor would feel very comfortable. We visited both Greenway ( shut Mons and some Tues) and Coleton Fishacre ( shut Fridays) and loved them both. The area around the hotel is great, walk to the sea and there is a boating lake and a cafe and a nature area, The hotel is very well run and we enjoyed the chats with the family who make this a four star hotel experience!

A First Rate Stay.
A very pleasant two night stay in this family run hotel. I booked the room 24 hours prior to our stay via Michelin. The staff really couldn't have done more to make us feel welcome in their hotel. The room, though small, was as advertised and was immaculate and appeared as if it had recently been decorated/carpeted. It was functional and comfortable - the bed was very comfortable.

A good point about the hotel, especially for the summer visitor, is its location; you can fall out of bed and then pretty much fall onto the beach a mere few hundred metres away - great for a late evening swim; essential to revive the weary traveler prior to having dinner.

Food:

Speaking of dinner - if you're only in the Paignton area for a few days then there isn't any real reason to hit the street (or phone) trying to find a suitable restaurant (it's pretty limited in any case in Paignton) - the meal we had, at Summerhill, was really very good, non pretentious, filling and served at appropriate times between courses - my rib-eye steak (cooked rare, as it should be, was exactly to my liking), I was clearly sated as I could only manage a sorbet for dessert... necessitating a further walk about the town to burn off further kilocalories. Top Hole chef.

We had breakfast as part of our booking - and, as I said to Mrs. Wilks' (the proprietor) charming daughter, the breakfast (full English cooked) was 1st rate faultless - a really well balanced and hearty breakfast that didn't skimp at all with the quality of the ingredients and was properly cooked. Make no mistake this wasn't some greasy spoon pretender breakfast masquerading as the Full Monty, it was the real deal and freshly cooked - what a treat. A breakfast that would get a man, on his pushbike, over the Tamar and deep into Cornwall before him needing further victuals, make no mistake (I'd visit again just for this!)

Summerhill has some really nice and relaxing rooms for guests to make use of downstairs. It's a nicely put together, solid, Edwardian building that's got bags of character, coupled with genuinely nice staff who clearly want their guests to have an enjoyable stay in the area... then to hopefully visit them again in the future.

Many thanks for the stay.

Weekend Away 25 - 27 July
What a fantastic little find, the hotel and the personal hospitality shown was great. Breakfast was probably the best I've ever had, and the quality of food was second to none. Whilst the room was a little expensive, it was the best room in the hotel, and worth it for the extra space and spectacular view over Goodrington. It was nearly 30 years since we had been to Devon last, and we were pleasantly surprised how time had served the area well. The Summerhill Hotel helped to make the dream come true, what a little gem. Keep it up.

Very Pleasant Stay
My Husband, elderly Aunt and myself enjoyed a very pleasant stay at the Summerhill Hotel the first week in June. The Hotel is family run and this reflected on the efficiency of the hotel. We were greeted with tea on arrival before being shown to our rooms. Our room was beautifully decorated, spacious and very clean, my Aunt was in a room which catered for disabled guests and had every thing she needed. Debbie, Peter and Sophia looked after us very well during our stay and nothing was too much trouble. The menu could be altered for our needs, which we found very

accommodating. The dining room and bar area is lovely with great views looking towards the sea. We would certainly recommend this lovely and friendly hotel.

A Really Pleasant Stay
A lovely hotel, nicely situated not far from either Paignton or Goodrington, both walking distance, but if you want take your car there are plenty of spaces in the 2 car parks. In fact the sea can be seen from bedroom, lounge and large dining room. The family are very pleasant and friendly and make you feel as though you are special guests. The bedroom was spacious with a comfortable bed, and a large bathroom with bath & power shower. The room had a hospitality tray with everything you could want, teas (fruit as well as normal) coffee & hot chocolate. The bathroom also has complimentary shampoo and bath/shower liquids. And if you need a lift, they have one to all floors. But the meals..... Wonderful. The choices are terrific and the portions are definately not small. From breakfasts to fantastic steak & ale pie, to the tastiest tenderest steak that I've had in a long time (just to name 2 main courses). And desserts. Just don't try to stick on a diet. Everything is homemade but fantastic. This was our 1st visit to Summerhill but will not be our last. Many thanks to Debbie and family for a lovely stay. Definately recommend this hotel.

October Stay
Our second stay at this relaxing hotel. Again we found the staff to be the friendliest of hosts. The rooms are clean, spacious and comfortable with all the extras that one expects today from a first –class hotel.

The food is excellent with immense servings so you definitely won’t eat between meals! This time round we reduced the number of items we chose for our full english breakfast to cope. We had the 2-3 course evening meal twice and again we weren’t disappointed with the quality of food prepared……and it is aesthetically presented.

We have stayed at a wide range of hotels in many parts of the country / abroad and we have never found anywhere to equal the total experience that the Summerhill Hotel offers; to us it has the ‘home from home’ experience…….and we always feel welcomed.

The hotel’s location too is excellent; the park, cliff gardens, and the beach are all within 5 minutes walk.

What A Brilliant Find !
What a brilliant find! On entering the hotel, for us, it had the wow factor, beautifully decorated, spotlessly clean and a very warm greeting from the owners and staff. We stayed in the Sydney Windsor room, which, for us, was an excellent choice, it was a lovely big room with a large comfortable bed and sea views. The beverage tray in the room had an excellent selection. The meals were first class with a good choice of menu. The evening meals were such a generous portion, to the extent that we only once managed dessert and then it was shared between us. As it was our anniversary weekend they arranged a couple of extra things for us, proving that nothing was too much trouble. We have no hesitation in recommending this hotel.

We were allowed to check in early which was a god send and saved us arriving at the wedding the clothes we had travelled down in. Couldn't fault the cleanliness of the room or any other areas. Only grumble would be that the rooms could do with slight modernisation, however if you want a base in a good location and don't plan to spend too much time sat in you're room worrying about the mismatching carpet and curtains this is a hotel I can gladly recommend.

Room had a balcony the doors of which we never closed as our time there was over the heatwave period. Therefore the room was reasonably cool at all times. The breakfast was as good as anywhere we have ever stayed both in quality and quantity and variation. We took advantage of the free admission to the Torbay Leisure Centre and used the swimming pool and spa facilities every morning before breakfast. The hotel is situated central to enable you to visit all of Torbay. Which we did. The staff are friendly and the hotel has a peaceful atmosphere. Would highly recommend this hotel to anyone.

It can be a bit of a gamble booking on line but we liked the sound of the location and the pictures of the bar, sitting room, and bedroom and the location. The breakfast sounded excellent. And it all was really good: food freshly prepared and cooked, and locally sourced where possible. Hard to select our favoaurites but the rib eye steak, apple pie (fantastic) and toffee pavlova win by a short head. Family run can be a plus or a minus - a plus here as they appear very happy working together. Would return and have no hesitation in reocmmending.

Warm Welcome And First Class Service And Food
We had a three night break in February and it was most unfortunate that on two of those nights we were the only guests in the hotel and so the bar was not open, however there was an honesty bar where you could help yourself and put a note in a book and pay later. We had a balcony room with a king size bed and it was warm and clean and beautifully furnished, as was the whole hotel. The staff put wine glasses in our room when they saw that we had brought a bottle of wine with us. We were given information about what to do and where to go and because it was below freezing for the whole of our stay we needed to go out in the car and it was nice to know there was a parking space when we returned. the breakfast was magnificent; not only the excellent food but the linen table cloths and a coffee pot that actually poured into the cup and not all over the table. It is certainly a hotel that takes pride in its presentation of everything and I cannot fault it.

This family-run hotel is situated on a gentle sloping hill; 10 minutes walk from Paignton, 2 minutes walk from Youngs Park, 3 minutes walk from Goodrington’s promenade and cliff walks, and 5 minutes from the steam railway station for trips to Dartmouth.

The staff were kind and helpful throughout our visit making sure everything was to our liking. Their hospitality was outstanding.

The restaurant setting provided us with superb coast and sea views to absorb whilst eating our meals. We found the food to an excellent quality and large portions were served. The traditional breakfast includes up to eleven items, besides a starter and toast. The evening meal option is highly recommended too. We particularly enjoyed the Paignton crab and prawn salads, and the deserts such as the toffee Pavlova are incredible in design and taste.

All the areas within the hotel that we accessed were immaculately clean and the interior design throughout is in keeping with the property’s architecture.

The room we stopped in had all the usual facilities; however we didn’t require some of them such as the large screen TV and radio as we prefer to get away from the ‘rat race’ when on holiday. As would be expected tea and coffee were replenished continuously. We also requested having a room that had 2 armchairs which made it more restful. Our bed was extremely comfortable and the en-suite facilities were spotless and clean - no discolouration or mould on sealants here compared to other establishments that we have visited.

On site car parking is easy; there are more spaces available than there are rooms, and the wide parking bays are clearly marked out.

We really enjoyed our holiday and look forward to a return visit to this peaceful and relaxed hotel.

In May 1985, just six days after the Bradford Stadium fire, a third of the old grandstand was destroyed during an early morning blaze. Nobody was hurt, but as a result, the grounds capacity fell to below 5,000. In the few years after the fire the ground saw little change. During the late 1980s and throughout the 1990s, Plainmoor has finally seen some major changes. The old Mini Stand made way for the all-seating Family Stand, which also houses offices, the boardroom and the club shop, as well as the pub and restaurant Boots and Laces, and the 200 Club bar.
